MIGRAIN: Introduction to feminism

 Everyday Sexism

Watch the Everyday Sexism TED talk from Laura Bates (linked above) and answer the following questions:

1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?
After her personal experiences on the bus and street.
2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?
Everyday Sexism is a place where women can freely talk about their experiences and be given the support needed to appropriate the issues of sexism and highlight the fact that its not okay.
3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project?
New technology was essential as it provided the safe space to talk about the issues of sexism for people all across the world.
4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism?
Personally I think there will, but not for a very long time. people who think sexism is okay will always be around and it will take decades to stomp them out completely.

Media Magazine: The fourth wave?

Read the article: The Fourth Wave? Feminism in the Digital Age in MM55 (p64). You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive here.

1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?
Networked feminism is the goal of ending social equality issues both on and using technology, such as social media. It is a problem that needs solving as women for centuries have been the centre of a social struggle, being treated unequally and wrongfully by men, and it needs to be fixed.
2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave of ‘networked feminism’?
1st: The suffragette movement
2nd: Equal rights and pay
3rd: Post-feminism
4th: Networked feminism
Personally I think we are in the middle stage between post-feminism and networked feminism, things are being done to cancel it out on social media and real life but it still very prominently exists.
3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a short summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.
Everyday Sexism: A website for people all around the world to speak out about their experiences with sexism and to realise that its not okay and things must be done.
HeForShe: An advancement to fight for the solidarity of gender equality.
FCKH8: viral video campaign combating racism, sexism and homophobia.
This Girl Can: A way to help women of all ages get involved into a sport, no matter who they are or what they look like.
4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?
I think that with the development of Everyday Sexism, its a step closer to this "fourth wave" of feminism, but there is still much more to be done to fully land us in that wave, we are still dealing with the many issues in the third wave.
