MIGRAIN: Representing ourselves - identity in the online age

 Task 1: Media Magazine article

Read the Media Magazine article on collective identity: Self-image and the Media (MM41 - page 6). Our Media Magazine archive is here.

Complete the following tasks on your blog:

1) Read the article and summarise each section in one sentence, starting with the section 'Who are you?'
Who are you?, How you can communicate to others yous self image.
I think, therefore I am, We can be whoever we want to be, no matter what.
The rise of the individual, You have the right to express yourself however you want
From citizen to consumer, An identity can be created from anything.
Branding and lifestyle, How a brand determined the way you live.
Who will we be?, Control over our public image.
2) List three brands you are happy to be associated with and explain how they reflect your sense of identity.
Sony, I love playing videogames and the Playstation has been around and been used by me nearly all my life. Samsung, for me it feels more simplistic and easier than other devices, and thats an opinion ive had for the last 6 years. And Amazon as their products such as Alexa help me greatly with problems such as sleep. These all play a big part in my life and help me be who I am.
3) Do you agree with the view that modern media is all about 'style over substance'? What does this expression mean?
Style over substance means that the look of something is prioritised over functionality. I disagree with the statement that its all about it as many pieces of media nowadays and in the past have been brilliant in the aspects other than looks, an example could be any any great movie with a small budget, like the Shawshank Redemption.
4) Explain Baudrillard's theory of 'media saturation' in one paragraph. You may need to research it online to find out more.
Baudrillards theory of media saturation is about how modern society has become so media saturated that it is impossible for audiences to experience or enjoy the real and natural world. This basically means that the world has become so obsessed with technology that the natural world has very little significance to millions of people and is now completely disregarded in terms of entertainment and enjoyment.
5) Is your presence on social media an accurate reflection of who you are? Have you ever added or removed a picture from a social media site purely because of what it says about the type of person you are?
My presence on social media is quite subtle, I use Instagram mostly to post pictures of my pets and X to read about news. I think its a good representation of myself as I prefer to be out of the spotlight.
6) What is your opinion on 'data mining'? Are you happy for companies to sell you products based on your social media presence and online search terms? Is this an invasion of privacy?
I heavily disagree with data mining, I think its wrong when a company makes money off of you without your knowledge and during the process giving people the grief of knowing theyre practically being watched by their phone or computer.

Task 2: Media Magazine cartoon

Now read the cartoon in MM62 (p36) that summarises David Gauntlett’s theories of identity. Write five simple bullet points summarising what you have learned from the cartoon about Gauntlett's theories of identity.
  • Masculinity is dominant when it comes to advertising
  • The idea of male gaze has not gone anywhere but evolved
  • There is no crisis with masculinity as its simply also evolving
  • Feminism has expanded astronomically over the last few decades
  • more inclusivity has developed in the world
